The castle on the River Suir is unquestionably the main attraction in Cahir. The town’s name actually derives from the stone fort or cathair which stood on the site of the castle in ancient times.
From the castle you can take the Coronation Walk southwards along the River Suir all the way to the pretty Swiss Cottage. The path northwards along the Suir leads to the Haw-Haw and St. Paul’s Church and you can return to the town centre via the Craft Granary.
Cahir Abbey is perhaps the town’s hidden treasure. Fishing on the River Suir and hill walking on the nearby Galtee Mountains are options for the more adventurous.
